UK Architects and the Upper Valley Haven

...were awarded the Efficiency Vermont 2011 Honor Award of "Best of the Best in Commercial Building Design & Construction" for New Construction, Small Buildings.

The award was for the Upper Valley Haven Adult Homeless Shelter
in Hartford, Vermont.

The project involved the renovation and expansion of an existing single family residence in to a 2 level shelter to accommodate 20 single adults in 10 double rooms. The shelter also includes a dining/living room a small commercial kitchen, a library, a computer room and office space for the shelter support staff.

The shelter is super-insulated, the windows are triple glazed, the lighting is controlled by occupancy sensors and timers, all of the lighting is extremely efficient including a number or LED fixtures.

All of the finishes are basic but durable. The project has been submitted for LEED certification and we anticipate achieving a Gold level.

KUA - Miller Bicentennial Hall - Phase I is complete!

Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, NH recently celebrated the grand opening of Miller Bicentennial Hall. The project is Phase I of a 3 phase renovation/addition. Phase I includes 14 classrooms, a 38 seat auditorium, and a technology classroom. All of the classrooms are equipped with state of the art Smart Boards, video projectors, speakers and wifi.

The project also includes a new plaza terrace and monumental stairs at the front entry.

Miller Hall was originally constructed as the campus dining hall in 1963 and over the building's lifetime has also served as the student center, the administrative center of the campus and as a fitness center. Phase 2 of the project will relocate the Library into the building and add 3 new classrooms. Phase 3 will add the Learning Center and 3 additional classrooms.

When all phases of the project are complete, there will be 19 classrooms, an auditorium, technology classroom, library with 4 group study rooms, a student lounge, archival display space and a learning center. The building will be 50 years old in the same year as the bicentennial of Kimball Union Academy.

Rear addition - accessible entrance. Since the existing building already had steps at the front entry and the building was right on the property line, the only location to accommodate an accessible entrance was at the rear of the building adjacent to the parking lot.

Upper Valley Rowing Boathouse - Concept Design

The Upper Valley Rowing Foundation was interested in a design for a new boathouse that would serve the UVRF membership and local high school rowing teams, as well as the general public. The proposed design included boat storage, an erg room, meeting space and an indoor rowing tank.

Naturewalk Condominiums, Lebanon, NH

Naturewalk is a multifamily condominium project with 34 two bedroom units on 3 levels. All of the residential units were constructed by a modular building manufacturer and delivered pre-built to the site. The modules were set in place by a crane.

The ribbon cutting ceremony for 21 Water Street in Claremont, NH was held onFriday June 19, 2009. Over 250 community members, project design and construction professionals, as well as local, state and national dignitaries were in attendance. US Senator Jean Shaheen and NH Governor John Lynch commended the City of Claremont, the Project Owners/Developers and the Design/Construction team on a job well done, especially considering the complex public - private partnerships and historic preservation aspects of the project.

Here are views of an early schematic for the KUA Student Center. The views show the proposed addition to the existing Dining Commons. The addition is creating a new entrance to the building and a large multi-purpose space that will be the main feature of the new Student Center. This scheme was abandoned in favor of a more traditional building form.

While attending the American Institute of Architects National Convention in San Antonio, Hunter waited in line for almost 2 hours to get Al Gore's autograph on a copy of An Inconvenient Truth. Both Chris and Hunter attended Al Gore's keynote speech to the AIA. The theme of this year's convention was "Going Beyond Green".

UKA has designed the renovation of an abandoned mill building in Claremont, NH to become 49 loft style residential condominiums. Most of the condominiums have 14 foot high ceilings with 10 foot tall windows. Many of the condominiums overlook the Sugar River and have views of Mt Ascutney. UKA is committed to working on projects that create better communities. This project will have a big impact on the revitalization of downtown Claremont.
